Brain Nerds: Smart Minds, Strong Hearts

Founded by Carolina Rosario

Brain Nerds is an initiative born from the deeply personal and professional experiences of Carolina Rosario, journalist and news anchor, who has made mental health one of her top priorities. This project stems from life experiences that shaped her from a young age: growing up witnessing her mother’s battle with chronic depression and facing the painful loss of loved ones to suicide—young lives, taken too soon—whose absences still echo in her life. These experiences not only left an indelible mark but also ignited an unwavering commitment in her to be an active force in the search for solutions.

Throughout her career as a journalist, Carolina has told hundreds of stories, but there is one she feels compelled to change: the alarming reality of youth mental health. The statistics are stark. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10 to 24 in the United States. Even more concerning, a recent study revealed that suicide rates among preteens have increased by 8% annually since 2008, with a significant rise among girls.

Brain Nerds was created as a response to this silent crisis, with the mission of providing tools, knowledge, and access to mental health care for people of all ages, with a special focus on children and adolescents. The project aims to be a clear and accessible voice for new generations, creating spaces where they can explore their emotions, learn to manage them, and find support in times of vulnerability. The premise is simple: when it comes to emotions and mental well-being, clarity and empathy are essential. As someone once told Carolina: “When I want to understand something about mental health, I read children’s books… because they resonate with me more.” This direct and simple approach is at the heart of Brain Nerds.

The project is not only about education but also about building a community of support and awareness. Through social media, workshops, educational resources, and community events, Brain Nerds seeks to break stigmas and foster necessary conversations about emotional well-being, especially among children, teens, and their families.
